What is Anxiety?

“Worrying is like carrying an umbrella every day, waiting for a storm that may never come—put it down and walk in the sunshine.”

What is Anxiety?

Anxiety is an emotion response that many people experience at various points in their lives. It’s like a feeling of worry, fear, or uncontrol about situations. It is important to recognize it’s symptoms and the different types that exist. Symptoms of anxiety can vary widely from person to person but often include restlessness, rapid heartbeat, difficulty concentrating, and irritability. Some may also experience physical symptoms such as sweating or trembling. It’s important to remember that these feelings are not just in one’s head; they can have real physical manifestations.

Types of Anxiety Disorders:

  1. Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD): Excessive worry about everyday issues such as health, work, and social interactions.
  2. Social Anxiety Disorder: Involves intense fear or avoidance of social situations due to worries about being judged, criticized or embarrassed.
  3. Panic Disorder: Where individuals experience sudden and overwhelming panic attacks that can lead to a fear and future attacks.
  4. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD): Where individuals experience intrusive thoughts and engage in compulsive behaviors in an attempt to alleviate their anxiety.

What Causes Anxiety?

Understanding what causes anxiety varies from person to person. There are several factors that can trigger anxiety, and recognizing these can be the first step toward managing it effectively. Common triggers include stress from work or school, financial concerns, relationship issues, or even significant life changes such as moving or starting a new job. For some individuals, certain situations—like public speaking or social gatherings—can also provoke feelings of anxiety. What triggers one person’s anxiety may not affect another in the same way. I have also heard of underlying health conditions and genetic predispositions may contribute to heightened levels of anxiety. But I am not a doctor, so I can not say if that is true or not. That would be a good question to ask your family physician, or phycologist or therapist.

How to Manage Anxiety?

It’s important to remember that everyone experiences anxiety differently, and what works for one person may not work for another. Here are some suggestions on what you can do manage anxiety:

  • Regular physical activity, even if it’s just a short walk, can also be beneficial promotes relaxation.
  • Mindfulness practices, such as meditation or deep-breathing exercises, can help ground us in the present moment and reduce racing thoughts.
  • Sharing our feelings with trusted friends or family members can lighten the load and remind us that we’re not alone in our struggles.
  • Seeking professional support from therapists or counselors is another valuable option when we need more tailored guidance.

My Experience With Anxiety

In my 30s, I developed social anxiety, the mere thought of attending events like weddings or graduations was dreading for me, and even dining out became a significant struggle. It was overwhelming; I often felt a wave of nervousness wash over me that left me mentally exhausted.

Over time, this practice became my cure. To this day, I no longer experience anxiety as I once did. My husband and I now travel frequently, which requires being around people—especially in bustling airports, I no longer get nervous or overwhelmed around people. Again, everyone experiences anxiety differently, and what works for one person may not work for another.

Through it all, I’ve come to realize that the holy spirit and my faith were all I truly needed. Although there were moments when work pulled me away from my devotion as a Christian, god was always there for me—even when I had placed him last in my life. This journey has taught me about resilience and the power of faith in overcoming life’s challenges.
